Similar to in Sumptuous Surfaces in the techniques taught, we will then develop
them into a method for expressing the individual's own work.
Suitable beginner to advanced.
Length of workshop 2 to 5 days
The longer time will allow more time for the development of personal imagery
from the techniques highlighted, this will arise from tutor set exercises and tutor
assistance on a one to one basis.
In this workshop we will explore an expressive approach to creating wool/silk
felted works. Drawing inspiration from images of favourite places we will create
a number of expressive, semi-abstract ‘landscapes.’
Techniques we will cover
-include constructing wool/silk felts,
-dyeing of wool and silk and creating an individual palette, -
developing an understanding of colour interactions,
-surface treatments of the silk layer such as printing, pigment painting, various
dye techniques, metal foils
-the use of stitch [ hand or machine] to enhance these pieces
-discussion on building a series of work, presentation of the work [ eg. hanging
methods, framing etc]
- discussion of further applications the wool/ silk ‘fabrics’ can be utilised in; such
as art quilts, clothing and soft furnishings.
